Meet the Deceitful Carrot and the Sneaky Beet

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

There is a huge controversy, I have just learned, regarding the ethics of sneaking vegetables into foods so your kids will get some nutrition along with their Mac n’ Cheese and breaded fish sticks.

As I understand the situation, numerous books have appeared on the shelves suggesting ways of getting fruits and veggies into your kids’ gullets without initiating World War 111 at the dinner table. Some of these books, such as Missy Chase Lapine’s cleverly titled The Sneaky Chef: How to Cheat on your Man (In the Kitchen) Hiding Healthy Foods in Hearty Meals , go beyond tricking the kids and move into the uncharted territory of tricking your husband into eating a little fiber along with his T-Bone and deep fried onion rings.

These and other similar books more or less passed under the radar until January of 2007 when Deceptively Delicious: Simple Secrets to Get Your Kids Eating Good Food by Jessica Seinfeld made its appearance. The book became a popular hit, and along with it came controversy and debate regarding the “correctness” of tricking the kids into eating healthy foods.

It’s not clear to me which came first – the book’s popularity or the controversy — but I suspect one led to the other. I have never written a book, but if I ever do, I PRAY that there will be a controversy and perhaps even a banning. I know of no better way to ensure sales. However, that’s a topic for another time. Let us return to the ethical considerations of tricking your kids at the dinner table.

I admit to feeling a little squeamish at the notion of tricking people into eating anything. It brings back memories of people trying to “trick” me into eating liver, a food I particularly dislike. Even though many years have passed, I still feel distrustful of the cooks who tried to sneak this foul substance into me by mixing it into beef pies and stews, and then taunting, ‘Ha, ha! Got you to eat liver and you didn’t even know it!” To this day, I question how far one can believe these well-meaning people or put trust in what they say. In other words, I consider that this type of trickery has the potential to damage relationships and the damage, although not huge, can last a lifetime.

Advocates of food trickery will argue that the end justifies the means. Good nutrition is vitally important to health and well-being. It is perhaps more important than ever as North America currently faces an epidemic of childhood obesity. If tricking the kids by adding a little pureed cauliflower to the pasta sauce means they’ll enjoy better health and perhaps achieve a lower body weight, then surely that is a good thing. Surely the long term effects of the improved nutrition are worth the small amount of distrust that may develop.

My position here is that nutrition is important – enormously important, and that nutritious foods should be served unabashedly and unashamedly. You might, for example, incorporate some pureed avocado into the quesadillas. You don’t do it because you are trying to trick anyone into eating better. You do it routinely because its good nutrition for everyone.

Yes, of course the oatmeal cookies contain grated carrots. Yes, of course the chocolate cake contains pureed beets. (Don’t laugh. It’s surprisingly good. You can’t taste the beets and the recipe is far from being new. Chocolate beet cake has been around for decades).

I was raised on a farm. We grew much of the food we ate, as did our neighbors. Fruits and veggies found their way into many dishes. After all, why would you cook with store bought ingredients when the root cellar and the canning shelves were filled with food waiting to be consumed?

We didn’t call it nutrition; we didn’t look at it as sneaking healthy food into people. It was just the way we cooked and ate. I carried this approach to cooking into my own household and considered it normal. Sneaking it in? No way.

I have not read Jessica Seinfeld’s book, nor have I read any other book of its ilk. However, according to the reviews at Amazon, Seinfeld herself is not advocating trickery by sneaking fruit and veggies into kids. She appears to be saying much the same thing I said earlier. Make this your natural approach to food preparation, keep no food-related secrets from the kids and when possible, involve your children in the cooking and food preparation process.

Given that Seinfeld doesn’t advocate deception in the first place, I’m confused as to how the controversy generated around her book. Perhaps it stems from the book’s title: Deceptively Delicious. The title itself may be a bit deceptive.

I do want to make one additional point. Incorporating fruit and vegetables into various recipes, or making healthy smoothies for lunch is an excellent way to improve nutrition. However, it is not, in itself, a remedy for obesity at any age. To lose weight or to prevent gaining body fat, age-appropriate portion control and activity levels must be added to a nutritional diet.

Now go eat your veggies

Tapping World Summit 2010 Ready to Launch

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

On February 1, registration opened for the Tapping World Summit 2010, an online event that introduces and promotes an alternative therapeutic approach known as “tapping.” The event is scheduled to run for ten days, commencing on February 21, 2010.

Tapping: What It Is

Derived from the new field of energy psychology, tapping is touted as a revolutionary approach to health and well-being. It borrows from the art of Chinese acupuncture and combines that knowledge with the latest practices in modern day psychology.

Many practitioners report that the painless and easy-to-learn practice provides fast and often permanent relief from mental, emotional and even physical conditions that had proven resistant to more traditional therapies.

About the Summit

The World Summit encompasses ten days of audio and video presentations from eighteen experts in the field, including Bob Doyle, Patricia Carrington, Brad Yates, Margaret Lynch and others.

The event offers free registration and participation. No tapping experience is necessary. The Summit provides demonstrations and tap-a-longs that gives a beginner the basic skills needed to participate.

Registrants have access to two audio or video presentations per day, for ten days. At the end of the event, the presentations are available for purchase.

Presentations

The presentations cover an array of topics related to personal well being.

Among the titles are:

  • Using Meridian Tapping to Quickly Manage and Eliminate Pain from Trauma, Injury or Surgery
  • Healing the Critical Voice
  • Skyrocket Your Success by Overcoming the Most Common Business Fears
  • Speaking Your Truth: Overcoming the Fear of Public Speaking
  • Overcoming the Damaging Effects of Childhood Trauma
  • Breaking the Chain of Addictions with Meridian Tapping
  • Freedom from Food! Releasing Your Cravings and Compulsive Eating Habits to Lose Weight and Feel Great
  • Meridian Tapping for Cancer Support
  • — and several more.

Those who register prior to February 21 have access to three recorded interviews with prominent figures: Jack Canfield of the Chicken Soup series, Joe Vitale (appeared in the highly publicized movie The Secret ), and Bruce Lipton, the author of The Biology of Belief .

Background

According to organizer Nick Orter of Try it On Everything LLC, Tapping World Summit 2009 attracted 81,000 participates from around the globe. He anticipates even better attendance in 2010.

Tapping is a similar practice to Emotional Freedom Techniques ® (EFT). EFT is a federally registered trademark belonging to its developer, Gary Craig. Before his recent retirement, Craig was instrumental in introducing EFT to numerous therapists, lay people and organizations around the world. His work has stood up to rigorous scientific testing.

Blogsvertise Your Blog

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

I’ve been looking for a way to bring in some extra cash through blogging, so needless to say I was interested and intrigued when I discovered Blogsvertise.com.

http://www.blogsvertise.com is an online service that helps both bloggers and merchants increase their bottom line. In other words, speaking as a blogger, this service helps me monetize my site and earn some extra dollars.

I know we’d all like to think that bloggers maintain their blogs purely to pursue their passions and interests, to express themselves through writing and to assist the viewers acquire useful information. All that may be true, but the other side of the coin is that we have to cover the expenses of maintaining a blog or a web site. In addition to that, many of us have to earn a living and ideally have enough cash left over to splurge on a few treats.

That’s where http://www.blogsvertise.com comes in. When you register as a blogger with Blogsvertise, you receive payment for writing about the web sites that they assign. The really great news is that you don’t have to compromise your integrity by endorsing  these sites if you question their worth.  If you want to give the site a negative critique, you are free to do so.

The only requirements are that you write about the site within five days of receiving the assignment, that you link to the site once, and that you mention the site’s name at least three times in the post.

This post is an example of a Blogsvertise post.

Blogsvertise does have a some requirements regarding the blogs it will accept. These requirements strike me as being simple, reasonable and easy to understand. Furthermore, if your blog doesn’t quite meet expectations at the time you register, they assign you a probationary status and the opportunity to improve your blog’s standing.

I think its a great idea — its win-win to everyone concerned, including blog visitors. They get the opportunity to learn about new web sites and services. Bloggers get to make some cash and merchants benefit by the  links to their web sites.

I’ve signed up with http://www.blogsvertise.com.  If you’re a blogger, you might want to give them a look over as well.

Looking for Limiting Beliefs Around Weight Management

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Limiting beliefs are beliefs that can get in your  way when you are trying to reduce your body fat or to maintain a desired body weight.

EFT tapping is one way to deal with this.

Your limiting beliefs and mine could be the same, or they could be different.  Do any of these sound like something you might hold true?

1. I always lose weight very slowly

2. I hit plateaus and it take forever to get beyond them

3. I have to stay on a diet forever if I want to keep my weight down

4. I have to diet rigorously. Every tiny “slip” sets me back.

5. I can’t have the foods I like best. I have to live the rest of my life without my favorite foods.

6. I’ll never get my weight down to what it used to be when I was 18

7. I can’t stop eating. It’s an addiction

8. I don’t want to face life without ice cream

9. I have a slow metabolism.

10. My overweight challenge is genetic. Its in my DNA to be overweight

11. I can’t resist food when I see it so I have to avoid seeing it.

12. Etc.

As I mentioned, those may or may not be your beliefs. I suggest you start doing EFT tapping with the sole purpose of discovering any beliefs you have that may be holding you back.

Just start tapping on the Karate Chop point. Begin by saying, “Even though I don’t know what my limiting beliefs are, I love, forgive and accept myself.” Do that three times, then move on to the top of the heat. “Even though I don’t realize all of my limiting beliefs, I know I have some..”  Continue making it up as you go along, and sooner or later a limiting belief will pop out of your mouth You may be surprised at what you hear yourself say.

When you discover one, tap on it until it disappears.

Continue until you have knocked out as many as you can find.

This EFT Script Overcomes Resistance to Losing Weight

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

Do you need to lose weight but just can’t seem to take the first step? EFT tapping is a wonderful tool to help you overcome whatever excuses you have for delaying the inevitable if you just can’t force yourself to do it.

Let’s say your favorite excuse is, “Everybody in my family is overweight.”

Why not tap that away?

Before starting any tapping session, be sure you have a drink of water. You brain works very hard during a tapping session and it requires hydration.  Drink water periodically during your tapping rounds as well.

Begin tapping, going around the tapping points that you typically use.

The following script is a good one. It gradually takes you through your resistance. Repeat as often as needed, and use on every excuse that comes to mind.

The EFT Script for Overcoming Diet Resistance

Even though I can’t lose weight because everybody in my family is overweight, I deeply and completely accept myself.”  Done three times.

I can’t lose weight.  It’s in my family. We’re all overweight. There is nothing I can do about it.  You can’t fight your genes. It’s not my fault. I have no control over this. I’m helpless against my family background. I’m doomed to be overweight just like mom or dad. There’s nothing I can do. It’s out of my hands. There’s no point even starting a diet. I don’t even want to lose weight. I want to be fat. I like being fat. It’s my destiny. Nobody is going to make me lose weight  Nobody is going to control me. I won’t give in to anybody. I’ll stay as fat as I want. It’s my business anyway.

Of course, I can see some advantages to losing weight. It might be worth considering some  day. Not today though. Not for a very long time. Maybe sometime I might consider losing weight. I might be okay to look slim and fit. I might like how I feel when I’m slender. I’d probably feel better. My partner would like it. My sex life might improve. My health would be better.

Maybe its worth thinking about losing weight. Maybe I might think about going on a diet. I think I might. I might do it. I might really get serious about this. I’m gong to do it Yes I am. I’m going to start losing weight right away. I want to do this.

It’s my decision. I’m in control here. I intend to have a slim, fit healthy body. I deserve to be healthy and fit. I’m doing it now. I’m doing it. I’m ready now. I can do this thing and I will do it. And that’s the way its going to be.

This is just one of the many ways that EFT tapping can help to promote weight loss.

No Motivation to Lose Weight? Try EFT Tapping

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

One of the most challenging aspects of going on a diet (or making a lifestyle change) is overcoming the initial resistance and apathy.

You know you need to lose weight. You know your need to. You know the quality of your life will improve if you rid yourself of the unwanted pounds.

Maybe every week you vow that you’ll start on Monday. But when Monday comes, the diet doesn’t happen.

Maybe you don’t even vow to start on Monday. Maybe you’ve just given up and resigned yourself to being overweight.

There is some good news for you. EFT tapping will remove this resistance easily and fairly quickly.

First, make a list of all the reasons why you do not take action.

A Few Popular Excuses for Avoiding Losing Weight

You may be familiar with some of the following:

I hate thinking about changing my eatingI hate giving in to all the people who are nagging me to lose weightIt’s no use anyway. I always gain it backWhat’s the point? I’m happy the way I am.I don’t believe obesity is as dangerous as they say.

If I lose weight, I’ll have to get a new wardrobe and I can’t afford it

I want to but I just haven’t got the will power

Food is the best thing in my life and I don’t want to give it up

I’m just a big loser anyway

People should appreciate me for myself and not my size

    I can’t lose weight. It’s genetic

All of my family members are overweight.

My friends are overweight and they won’t chum with me if I lose weight

I like eating foods full of fat and sugar

    I hate exercise

I’ll start after Christmas, my birthday, my vacation, etc.

    I’m under too much stress

I don’t have time to plan healhy meals

I have to eat in restaurants a lot and you can’t lose weight that way

It’s a side effect of my medication

    Healthy food costs too much

I’d have to prepare separate meals for my family

    Everybody gains weight after menopause

Everybody gains weight after having a baby

I sit at a desk all day. I can’t get any exercise

Everybody with my ethnic background eats a lot

    People tempt me to overeat

    I don’t process carbohydrates properly

    My metabolism is too slow

    etc.

Once you have identified your own excuses, begin doing EFT tapping on each one of them.

Top Ten Ways for Using EFT to Lose Weight

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

EFT tapping (emotional freedom technique) is a huge benefit to anyone wanting to lose weight or to maintain a weight loss.

EFT is a component of the new Energy Psychology. It’s simple to do, easy to learn, has no known side effects, and its amazingly effective. Essentially, you tap your fingers on various acupuncture points while focusing on an emotion or condition you want to change.  The process redirects electromagnetic energies associated with emotion, behaviours, physical health and well-being.

If you’ve never done EFT tapping before, it sounds, looks and feels very strange. However, as I said earlier, its enormously powerful. And, the good news is that you don’t have to believe in EFT for it to work. Your belief is unimportant. The healing happens at an energy level. You will believe in it after you experience the results — and in a lot of cases, you will achieve results that eluded you through the more traditional approaches.

Here are ten tips for using EFT to lose weight and keep it off.

 1. EFT Tapping to Reduce Food Cravings.

Do several rounds of tapping to reduce food cravings. “Even though I crave this chocolate cake…”  After some rounds of tapping, the craving for the cake is gone.

 2. EFT Tapping for Emotional Eating

Many overweight people are emotional eaters.  When you feel upset, you eat. When you feel angry, you eat. When you feel anxious.,  you eat.  By tapping directly on the emotion you are feeling, you remove this uncomfortable emotion and the desire to overeat goes away along with it.

Suppose you have anxiety over money matters. Your anxiety drives you to eat food high in fats, sugars and starches. EFT tapping removes the anxiety, and that has two benefits. Not only have you removed the desire to overeat, but without this worry and fear, you’re in a better frame of mind to find a solution to the money situation.

“Even though I am so worried about paying my bills this month…. ”

3. EFT Tapping for Vague Discontent

Sometimes you just feel unhappy, irritable and discontented for no good reason. This erodes your motivation to eat sensibly. You just don’t give a darn.  Even in this situation, EFT is the answer. “Even though I’m feeling “blah” and don’t know why…. ”

 5.  EFT Tapping to Remove Resistance to Starting a Diet

Sometimes you put off starting a diet even though you really want to be rid of the excess weight. Going on a diet means a change of lifestyle that seems uncomfortable.  You are keenly aware of “what you will be giving up.” You anticipate great hunger. You dislike eating fruits and vegetables. You don’t want to exercise.  EFT tapping helps you overcome this resistance. You may have to tap persistently for a few days or longer before you are clear about your commitment. “Even though I don’t want to start a diet…”

6. EFT Tapping to Improve Self Esteem

Obesity leads to self hatred and lowered self esteem. Self hatred does not motivate you to diet and improve your life. The lower your self esteem, the harder it will be for you to make a commitment to health and fitness. Use EFT regularly to remove self hatred related to weight issues and self hatred related to anything else. ‘Even though I feel badly about myself …”

7. EFT Tapping to Remove Resistance to Exercise

Dislike exercise? What excuses do you come up with to avoid exercising regularly? Identify whichever one you are using today, and tap, “Even though I don’t want to exercise because ….”   The resistance will reduce after a few rounds of tapping.

8.  EFT Tapping to Prepare for Dangerous Eating Situations

Worried about losing control of your eating at the birthday party or other social activity? Tap in confidence and commitment before you go. “Even though I am afraid of losing control of my eating tonight…”

9. EFT Tapping to Deal with Plateaus

Plateaus are discouraging. You’re doing everything right and the scales won’t budge. Instead of giving up and ordering a pizza, do some EFT tapping. “Even though I’m discouraged because I haven’t lost weight for two weeks…”

10. EFT Tapping to Reinforce Positive Messages

Every day, do a few rounds of tapping to reinforce your commitment to your new lifestyle.  Think of all the positive lifestyle messages you want to strengthen, then go through several rounds of tapping while saying them aloud. eg  “I intend a slim, fit, healthy body.”

Try EFT and The Silva Method to Stop Yo Yo Dieting

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

Anyone who struggles with obesity in our fat-phobic culture understands what happens to the self worth when the scales go up.

The Weight Loss Cycle

First, you go on a diet.  You lose weight. Perhaps you lose enough weight that people  complement you. Maybe you even reach your goal.

You feel great about yourself. You look good. People give you  positive feedback. Your physician is ecstatic. You may even notice that strangers treat you better than when you were overweight.

Life is great.

 The Weight Gain Cycle

Then something happens. Perhaps quickly, or perhaps slowly, you gravitate back to your old eating habits. You exercise less, or perhaps not at all.

The excuses return.

  • I’m stressed out.
  • The weather’s depressing me.
  • It’s my birthday.
  • It’s Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Halloween, etc.
  • I got a two-for-one coupon from MacDonalds
  • My leg hurts
  • etc.

You know you’re on a slippery slope.  You resolve to “get back on track.” Starting tomorrow.

But when tomorrow comes, you can’t muster up whatever it takes to stop the dangerous spiral. As time passes, the weight returns. Regularly, you resolve to do something about it. But you seem completely, totally unable to follow through.

Your self esteem plummets. You begin to hate yourself for letting this happen. The more you hate yourself, the less motivation you have to try to get the weight off.

Eventually, you gain back all of the lost weight, and perhaps even extra pounds on top of it.  Then one day, your motivation returns. You start taking the weight off once again and your self esteem rises accordingly.

 Then the whole thing repeats.

Weight Off– High Self Esteem — Weight Loss  — Low Self Esteem — Weight Off – High Self Esteem — Weight Gain — Low Self Esteem …

And here’s the result of this vicious circle. Every time you regain the weight, your self esteem hits a new low. When you lose the weight, your self esteem goes up accordingly, but the ‘high point’ gets lower each time you complete the cycle.

In time, even your highest period of self esteem isn’t that high any more.  And your motivation to lose the weight drops accordingly. What’s the use?

Breaking the Vicious Circle

There is good news about this. I discovered the solution. I reduced my weight by more than seventy pounds and I am keeping it off.

You can stop this cycle dead in its tracks, at any point, by using a combination of the Silva Method and EFT (emotional freedom technique).  It worked miracles for me. Why not give it a try?
